Digital Wellbeing: Rethinking Our Behaviours in a Tech-Driven World

We have sprinted down a rabbit hole of constant connectivity, often without fully realising the toll it can take.

In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, it’s becoming increasingly important to reflect on how we engage with technology. Our behaviours have evolved rapidly alongside the advancements in devices, apps, and online tools, leading to a complex relationship between our digital habits and wellbeing.

Let’s take a moment to rethink those behaviours and cultivate a more mindful approach to our use of technology.

The Importance of Digital Awareness

Over the last two decades, technology has radically transformed the way we live, work, and interact. While it’s brought incredible benefits, there’s no denying the impact on our attention spans, our psychological health, and even our physiology. We have sprinted down a rabbit hole of constant connectivity, often without fully realising the toll it can take. Awareness is the key to maintaining balance. Recognising how deeply we are meshed with technology helps us make informed choices about how to use it in ways that support, rather than hinder, our wellbeing.

Tips for Healthier Digital Behaviours

  1. Turn Off Notifications
One of the simplest ways to regain focus is to turn off non-essential notifications, on desktop, phone and tablet . The constant pinging of messages and alerts pulls us away from productive work, increasing stress levels and scattering our focus.
  2. Capture Thoughts on Paper
If something pops into your head that you feel you ‘need to do’ on your electronic device, try to resist the pull to reach out to your phone. Instead, using pen and paper, capture it and make the choice to proceed to the task on your device later. Jotting things down manually not only keeps your phone usage in check but also engages your brain in a different, more mindful way.
  3. Take Screen Free Breaks
Scheduling regular breaks from your devices will not only support your eye health, it can also help recalibrate your relationship with technology.

These moments create space to reconnect with our body’s need, with other people in person, reduce stress, and foster creativity.

Awareness is the first step towards an intentional use of technology

This conversation on Digital Wellbeing is only the beginning. There’s so much more to explore! The technology we’ve embraced in the past two decades has changed our lives, mindsets, and our attention spans in ways we may not fully realise.

We’ve become so intertwined with our devices that we often forget to check in with ourselves. This awareness empowers us to take control of our digital behaviours and ensures we maintain a balance that supports our wellbeing.

So, the next time you pick up your phone or sit down at your computer, ask yourself: How can I use this technology in a way that truly enhances my life?
